Julie Kailin

Associate Professor
Department of Educational Policy and Community Studies


Julie Kailin teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in the history of American education, race relations in education, multicultural education, cultural foundations of education, and urban education. Her research focus has been on the political economy of racism in education, whiteness studies, and how white teachers' perceptions of racism negatively affect the education of African-American children. She has also worked as a consultant to various school districts teaching professional development classes for teachers on anti-racism education.

Kailin is a frequent presenter at state, national, and international conferences. Her current research focuses on problems and possibilities for effective parent involvement in urban schools. She is author of "Anti-Racist Education: From Theory to Practice," Rowman & Littlefield Publishers (2002). She earned her M.A. and M.L.S. degrees from Univeristy of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a Ph.D. from University of Wisconsin-Madison.
